Pogo Stylus review

As a person who has used Tablet/Slate PC’s for a number of years I am a big fan of “inking” notes in during meetings or while on the phone. Jotting down info that I can email, save into evernote beats scanning in my physical notes. The iPad seems like it would be a natural device to capture this type of data. So this weekend I picked up a Pogo stylus from the Mac Store in Redmond. It’s designed for the iPhone, coming with a clip that lets you mount it on the phone itself:

I guess this would be handy in cold weather if you had to wear gloves. The device itself is small and light, made of aluminum and has a foam like writing “tip”.

When using it on the iPad it works fairly well, however you need an application with “palm rejection” technology otherwise you cannot rest you hand on the screen while writing. Sometimes I found that it would not detect the device instantly, forcing you to go back and re-write a letter. I found that I had to use more pressure than I wanted to if I wanted to ensure good results.

Overall it does what it is designed to do, but I am disappointed by the inking experience on the iPad. It is not nearly as good as what I experienced using onenote and my HP Tablet PC. I might use it to jot down some notes and to edit photos, but I don’t see it being a regular input device for the iPad. Here is a link to Ten One Design, the manufacturer of the Pogo Stylus.
